What Exactly is a Full Dog Grooming and Styling Appointment?

The first thing people think when hearing of the term, "dog grooming," is a bath and haircut. Well, that is about 1/3 of the entire grooming process. A small breed requires so much more, and everything is designed for the comfort and health of your little pooch.

Every appointment is my Urban Doggie 15-Step Signature Spa. There is no a la carte. There is no menu where you choose which of the 15 services you want on the menu. You get the entire service, for the same price every time. Here's what is included in your appointment:

The Urban Doggie 15-Step Signature Spa

Health & Hygiene

1. Welcome & Relax I don't rush into anything. I start with a proper hello — some hugs, some gentle reassurance — so your pup has a chance to settle in and feel safe before I begin.

2. Health Check Before the bath, I do a thorough once-over: skin, coat, eyes, ears, and paws. If I notice anything worth your attention, I'll let you know.

3. Top Shelf Hydro-Bath A deep, professional wash using premium pH-balanced shampoos chosen specifically for your dog's coat type.

4. Facial Scrub Gentle, tearless cleansing around the eyes, muzzle, and chin — the areas that deserve extra care.

5. Nail Trimming Careful, precise trimming of nails and dewclaws to a comfortable, safe length. Included always — not an add-on.

6. Ear Cleaning Soothing removal of debris to keep ears healthy and prevent infection.

7. Gland Expression External anal gland maintenance as part of your dog's routine care. Most groomers charge extra. It's included with me.

8. Eye Clearing Careful trimming around the eyes for better visibility, comfort, and cleanliness.

Styling & Comfort

9. Precision Haircut Hand-finished, breed-specific styling tailored to your dog's coat and your preferences. I'll always check in with you about what you're hoping for before I start.

10. Hand Blow-Dry A thorough professional dry using a hand-held dryer only. No cage dryers — ever. Your

dog is on the table and in my hands the entire time.

11. Sanitary Trim A hygiene-focused cleanup of the belly, groin, and hindquarters areas.

12. Paw Pad Care Trimming the hair between paw pads for better traction inside your home and out — especially important on Kirkland's wet surfaces in the rainy months.

13. Deep Brush-Out A thorough brush-through to remove dead hair, prevent matting, and leave the coat smooth and shiny.

14. Curated Finishing Touch A seasonally curated bandana to send your pup home in style. A small thing, but it makes people smile every time.

15. Hugs & Kisses The send-off they've earned. Your dog leaves clean, happy, and ready to be shown off.

Your pet will never go into a cage, before or after, and never ever at any time! This is a HUGE factor for a nervous Maltipoo in Moss Bay, or a timid Yorkie from Market near Waverly Beach Park. Small dogs can sense the stress of people and other dogs in kennels and it can really mess with them. A calm environment isn't a luxury, it's pretty much a requirement.

Also, I am the only groomer. That means when you book me, Tia, on the appointment, you will see only me. And then when you come back, it will still be me. One voice, one mind, two hands, and the whole experience is for every appointment.

It's also all in your driveway. So your pup will never be carted all around the city to come get groomed. South Juanita families from Juanita Beach Park, who have been there and done that, tell me that it is what they love the most. One appointment, right there in there driveway. All my dog grooming services in Kirkland will be performed at your home.

The Most Common Coats That Require Extra Help

Some breeds are far more high maintenance and will be a bit harder to groom, as you can see below.

Having mixed-coat dogs changes the ways I groom that dog. A Poodle is not the same as a Shih Tzu. The coat on crossbreeds such as a Cavoodle or Maltipoo is a hybrid of 2 distinctly different textures. The Poodle texture is tight, tight curls, yet it has a softer undercoat that is not as silken. These 2 together will cause matting in as little as a few days. Many of my clients in the Moss Bay area tell me that they are constantly brushing their dogs down after long walks on the Kirkland water front. It is a safe bet that if it has been a week since you last brushed your Maltipoo or Cavapoo, then matting is already developing. I see this all of the time and the coat types that require the highest frequency of dog grooming & styling in Kirkland include the following:

  • Maltipoo & Cavapoo coats of a wavy to curly texture that collect debris & mat at the root.
  • Toy & Miniature Poodle coats that curl tightly, mat behind ears, under legs and around collar line.
  • Shih Tzu & Havanese coats of long, flowing hair that knots unless brushed every other day.
  • Yorkie coats of fine, silky hair that will split and tangle, especially around face & paws.

The majority of dogs I see that arrive at my shop in severe matting are crossbreds and I do not blame the owner for this; it is only the nature of the coat and it requires higher maintenance than one thinks. When you give the grooming of a small breed to a professional like myself, a groomer with 22 years experience, you are getting 22 years of expertise on what area to brush first. You can be rest assured that I will comb behind the ears, between toes, along harness line and in the sanitary area. Right here in Norkirk near the elementary school, I have a set schedule that includes a couple of Cavapoos and their owners found that, with consistent brushing at home plus a full groom every 4-6 weeks keeps their dogs comfortable and mat-free. Matting is not just unsightly; matting causes physical discomfort, the continuous pulling drags against your dog’s skin; it may cause skin inflammation and even sores underneath. Your little dog requires the experience of groomings that are unique to their individual requirements and that begins with an understanding that each specific coat has a different requirement.

Your Dog’s Grooming in Kirkland Is Influenced by Kirkland’s Outdoors Lifestyle

Your Maltipoo had a great time this morning at Doris Cooper Houghton Beach Park. Playing around in the water close to the sand, running through the grass and stopping at every marker to sniff it, and now, they look like they just wrestled with a mud puddle. That's Kirkland life with a small dog.

I see this every single day. People take their Yorkies and Shih Tzu with them on the trails around Bridle Trails State Park, and you know that by the end of the walk they're covered with burrs and fine matter stuck deep in their undercoat. Then you'll see dogs that come along on walks to Marina Park in Moss Bay, covered in sand, water, and an unmistakable lake smell. And no amount of towel drying will remove it. This is Kirkland, where your dog is going to spend far more time outside than others do, which is great for their health but not so great for their coat.

This is what buildup between grooming sessions does:

  • Fine, sandy dirt stuck to the skin, causing itchiness, hot spots, and irritation
  • Matted coat, where moisture gets stuck, and becomes tighter with time
  • Sticks, seed pods and other trail gunk in leg and belly fur
  • Seasonal pollen in the face, eyes and fur on the paws, leading to itchy, irritated skin

Small dogs under 25 pounds mat much faster than a larger dog does. A mat will tighten, and that will pull against the dog each time it walks. The American Kennel Club reports regular grooming will reduce skin conditions that stem from this kind of buildup. My customers, who live in Kirkland, book dog grooming and styling every four to six weeks. But if you and your dog hike in Watershed Park, you may need grooming every three weeks. Your dog's coat type and lifestyle determines just what it needs. There's no guessing about it. A mobile dog groomer is more than a luxury; for a small breed dog, it's really the smart choice. A weekend of outside fun, and I come to your driveway. Your dog never needs to ride in the car to my salon, covered in dirt and trail debris. One appointment. All of your dog's needs met right in your driveway.

How Do You Know If You are Overdue? Time To Book Now!

Ever been brushing your dog with their own little brush and it gets stuck halfway through?

It's a mat that's right up against your dog's skin, and you're already a little late.

I can say with certainty that most of the small dog owners I treat here in Kirkland don't intentionally let their dog run too far past their date for grooming. We all have those days that turn into weeks, and before it, the last time your dog's coat had a trim was eight weeks ago! It's fairly common for a small breed dog under 25 pounds to be "overdue" in just that short period of time. Small dogs have a finer coat that grows a bit more quickly, and their skin has much more to do with any potential tangle or knot that may develop.

I'm sure these conditions sound familiar. Here are some I find regularly:

  • A fur mat behind the ears, under the front and hind legs, or under the dog's collar line
  • Eye staining, the kind that's darkened in color or has crusted over the area
  • Nails that click loudly as your dog's walks across the floor, or those that have become long enough to grow and curl in towards the dog's paw pad
  • Greasy or foul odor that hasn't been resolved from bathing at home
  • Paw scratching, butt scooting, or increased self-grooming or biting at the paws

All of these can show up with any small breed, and often with great regularity! A Yorkie will visit my mobile grooming business, coming in from the Moss Bay area of Kirkland, near the water, and the owner will exclaim, "I thought I had more time!" But you had a lot of time, and his coat did look okay on top. What was underneath is where I found a many mats. A small breed dog like this can conceal a mat until it becomes extremely uncomfortable.

A dog walking with long nails is no longer walking like a dog. A poor walking pattern, like that one, can have a detrimental effect on a small dog's joints as well, which is of a particular concern to a small dog like a Shih Tzu or Havanese who can't bear their body weight like other breeds.

We have all heard of a mat causing pain, but did you also know that when a mat stays on the skin long enough, they will trap moisture and can lead to skin rashes, hot spots, or a more serious skin infection?

This same thing also occurs with a dog in the Bridle Trails section of Kirkland that has just spent the afternoon running the wet trails. Any excess moisture gets trapped in the wet coat that has gotten very long and unwashed.

You really don't have to wait until your small dog experiences all this discomfort. You're not sure if your dog actually needs the service? I'm here to tell you: no worries, it is better to be safe! I've been grooming 22 years and tell everyone who asks: It is far better to book too early rather than booking too late. Small dogs gain the most from their appointments when we groom around their needs. We should start that process with scheduling an early appointment instead of a delayed one.

How to prepare your dog for an appointment

So, your appointment is scheduled. Great. What now?

We often overlook this step. While many owners worry, I've found in my time that there's very little you need to be anxious about, but there is one golden rule I repeat with my dog owners: Keep a normal morning routine for your dog.

When I show up to your house and you appear stressed or nervous, small breeds often feel that tension too. If your dog feels your anxiety as soon as I arrive up to your house, they're likely to have a hard time during your appointment if you are. But if you keep your dog relaxed, small dogs tend to go much smoother.

Here are a few other things you should do before the appointment:

  • Before I arrive, please let your dog out to do his business outside.
  • Do not feed your dog right before I arrive. A large meal is not recommended within 2 hours of your appointment. A small breakfast is fine; do not overfill your dog!
  • Have your dog ready to be taken. Don't send your dog to a friend's for a playdate or keep him out of sight in a room in your house. He should be there when I arrive.
  • If your dog is wearing a collar or harness, please take them off. It helps me to see his entire body when we start.
  • Let me know if you have any special instructions. Any new skin sensitivities? A particular spot has been itching? Is there a cut you're hoping to have done?

This last item is often more important than the others. I service all of Kirkland, from South Juanita to neighborhoods near Juanita Beach Park, as well as Norkirk, quiet neighborhoods near Norkirk Playfields. Each dog has individual requirements, so feel free to let me know.

One thing I've found quite jarring, though, is when the owner is working on a matted coat or attempting to brush out mats right before the appointment. Don't do that. If your Shih Tzu or Havanese is matted, let me take care of it. If you try to pull out tangles with the wrong kind of brush, it could create stress and irritation for your dog. Just let me take care of it.

Additionally, don't worry if you think your dog is ready for their first appointment. Small breeds aren't just a small version of dogs; they're completely different and should be groomed accordingly. We move at your dog's pace and we'll only begin the groom once your dog is comfortable. A good first groom can be great to set them up down the road.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's included in a dog grooming and styling appointment with Urban Doggie in Kirkland?

Every appointment includes The Urban Doggie 15-Step Signature Spa — not a menu, few add-ons, everything your dog needs in one visit. That means a full brush-out, bath, conditioning treatment, ear cleaning, nail trim, haircut, and more. All-Inclusive Spa Package. One price. No surprises. There's only one groomer here, it's me, Tia. You book me, you get me, every single time — from hello to goodbye.

How does Kirkland's outdoor lifestyle affect how often my small dog needs grooming?

Most Kirkland dogs need grooming every four to six weeks. But if your pup is hitting trails near Bridle Trails State Park or splashing around at Juanita Bay Park, every three weeks is smarter. Moisture, mud, and trail debris work deep into small breed coats fast. Dirt builds against the skin. Mats tighten. That causes real discomfort. I'll look at your dog's coat and lifestyle and tell you exactly what schedule makes sense — no guesswork.

Why is mobile grooming better for my small dog than a traditional salon?

Mobile grooming isn't a perk. For small breeds, it's the smarter and calmer choice. Your dog skips the car ride, the loud salon, the strange dogs, and the waiting. My van coming to your driveway changes everything — not just your schedule. One-on-One. Cage-Free. Every Time. Your dog never sees a cage — not before, not after, not ever. Small breeds pick up on stress fast. Removing that stress makes the whole groom calmer and easier on your pup.

My dog has a Maltipoo or Cavapoo coat — how often does it really need professional grooming?

Wavy-to-curly mixed coats like Maltipoos and Cavapoos mat in days, not weeks — especially here in Kirkland where dogs are outside often. I see serious matting in these coats more than any other. Small-breed grooming done by someone who's spent 22 years mastering it means I know exactly where each breed mats first. Every four to six weeks is the standard. Your small dog deserves a grooming experience built around their needs, and that starts with the right schedule.

What should I expect when you arrive at my home for a grooming appointment?

I pull my custom-built Mercedes Sprinter van right into your driveway and greet your dog calmly. I work exclusively with small breed dogs under 25 lbs., so my van and every tool inside was built for dogs like yours. Your pup settles in at their own pace — no rushing. From the moment your dog steps in, to the moment they step out — no crates or cages ever. One appointment. Every service done right in your driveway. That's the whole deal.

Is Urban Doggie a good fit for nervous or anxious small dogs in Kirkland?

Yes — anxious small dogs are exactly who I work with best. Being gentle isn't optional — it's my personality and every day standard. No front desk. No strangers. When you book, you get me — one calm voice, one set of hands, the whole appointment. Two decades of hands-on grooming — no shortcuts. Kirkland families have trusted me with their most nervous pups for 16 years. If your dog has struggled at a salon before, this is a very different experience.
