Dog Grooming in Kirkland, WA
Dog grooming in Kirkland isn't one-size-fits-all, and after 16 years of showing up in this community, I've learned that every dog coming through my door has their own story. Some are brand new puppies taking in the world for the first time. Some are senior dogs who've been getting groomed their whole lives but need a gentler touch now that they're older. Some have coats that have gotten away from their owners — not because of neglect, but because life gets busy and Kirkland's wet winters don't wait for anyone. And some are dogs who've had a bad experience somewhere along the way and just need someone who understands that grooming doesn't have to be stressful.
That's why I offer more than a standard bath-and-trim. My full service dog grooming covers everything your small dog needs from nose to tail — bath, blow dry, brush out, haircut, nail trim, ear cleaning, and those finishing details that make your pup look and feel like themselves again. For dogs with longer, styled coats, dog grooming and styling goes a step further. We'll talk about exactly the look you're going for, whether that's a classic breed cut, a practical puppy cut for your Maltipoo, or something in between. I bring photos, I take notes, and I remember what we did last time so we're always building on something rather than starting over.
For puppies, their first groom is one of the most important appointments they'll ever have — and one of the most underestimated. A good puppy's first groom sets the tone for every appointment that follows. I take it slow, keep it positive, and make sure the experience ends on a high note. Puppies that have a great first experience tend to become dogs that actually enjoy grooming, and that makes everything easier for everyone, including you. If your pup is brand new to this, please don't wait until their coat is out of control before booking that first session. Earlier is always better.
On the other end of the spectrum, senior dog grooming requires its own kind of patience and awareness. Older dogs get tired more easily. They may have arthritis or skin sensitivities that weren't there a few years ago. They might not be able to stand as long as they used to. I adjust every part of the session around where they are right now — not where they were at three years old. Keeping up with regular grooming as dogs age isn't something to cut back on. In fact, it's often when staying on schedule matters most, because their coats and skin can change quickly and those changes are worth catching early.
De-matting treatment is something I offer, but I'll always be honest with you about what's realistic. Some mats can be worked through carefully with the right tools and patience. Others have been there long enough that the kindest thing for your dog is a fresh start with a shorter cut. I'll never put a dog through an uncomfortable de-matting session when a reset cut would be the better call. If your dog has come in with significant matting, we'll talk through the options together before I do anything.
And for dogs that are anxious or fearful around grooming — this one is close to my heart.
Grooming for anxious and fearful dogs is something I've built my entire approach around. Working one-on-one in a mobile setting, with no other dogs around, no kennel waiting, and no salon noise, makes a genuine difference for sensitive dogs. There's no handoff to another person, no crate between steps, no rushing. It's just me and your dog, moving at a pace that actually works for them. I've had dogs come to me that their owners thought would never be able to be groomed, and we've gotten there together — slowly, carefully, and on their dog's terms.
How to Prepare for a Dog Grooming Appointment
You’ve booked your dog for a groom. Now what? Some preparation is necessary, but the amount of preparation required should be directly proportionate to how easily they can become stressed. It’s especially important to prepare for a grooming appointment for small dogs.
Take your pup on a quick walk the morning of the appointment. A quick trip around the block near Juanita Bay Park in South Juanita, or just around your neighborhood, will get some nervous energy out before I pull up on your front door. A tired dog is a relaxed dog. I appreciate every time this happens!
What You Shouldn’t do to Your Dog Before the Groom
- Bathing before a groom isn't necessary! In fact, bathing your dog the day of a groom will dry their skin and make their fur more challenging for me to work with. Bathing and brushing are something I handle in my fully customized Mercedes Sprinter van, which was created for small dog grooming.
- Do not try to remove the tangles or mats yourself. Dealing with the tangles and matting yourself can be painful to your dog. Your dog is already going to be more stressed than usual before I even get them started. This type of removal is best left to the professional and requires the appropriate grooming tools. Please refer to the Humane Society Guide to Grooming Your Dog at Home for more information on the appropriate grooming care of your dog at home.
- Give your dog a meal at least two hours before I show up. A full tummy can make them sick during the appointment, but a very hungry dog isn't much better either; just hit the sweet spot.
- Take the harness or leash out near your front door, and I will do my part to arrive in my van. Arriving at your Kirkland driveway makes the start of our appointment nice and easy for your dog.
- Let me know if you have noticed anything new, such as a lump, a sore spot, or a change in how your dog acts. I take care of everything from 10-pound Yorkies to high-strung Maltipoos, and those small details matter to me.
Most people don't think about this part: your mood and energy matter. If you're feeling apprehensive about your dog's groom, they will feel it. Small dogs are extremely sensitive and can pick up on your emotions. So take a deep breath and know that your pet will be arriving at a one-on-one, cage-free appointment with someone who has been a small breed grooming specialist for 22 years. That means no cages and no crowds, just your dog and I.
Are you unsure if your pup needs special care? Please feel free to ask. I groom all kinds of pets, including puppies who have never been groomed before, anxious dogs, and senior dogs. Whatever your small breed may need, I have probably done a hundred or more times. Not sure if your dog needs it? Just give me a phone call and we can talk about it.
How Often do Kirkland Dogs Need Grooming?
This is probably the most commonly asked question I receive, so I should probably have a more clear cut answer than: “it depends.” The schedule will largely depend on breed and coat type, but can also vary depending on how much time they are outside in nature. Generally, small breeds do best on the 4-6 week schedule. Anything more, and they can start getting into tangles, matted fur, nails growing too long, etc. In the Moss Bay neighborhood close to the waterfront here in Kirkland, you often see Maltipoos and Havanese that have been left without a groom for too long, especially after rainy mornings in the Seattle spring and fall. They go for long periods of time without a brush out after a nice walk, the humidity from the Puget Sound is trapped in their beautiful fur, and then you have a matting problem.
Here’s a good breakdown based on what we see on an average day:
- Yorkies and Shih Tzus that are kept on longer cuts should be groomed every 3-4 weeks
- Cavapoos and Maltipoos in a short puppy cut can get away with 5 or 6 weeks
- Toy or Miniature Poodles fall somewhere in between
- Older dogs with longer hair can benefit from gentler and more frequent sessions, not less
Kirkland’s weather has to play a factor into how long it takes for a small dog to naturally dry off at home, which means that their coats stay damp longer in the fall and winter months. This extra moisture can lead to skin conditions that can go unnoticed. Regular professional dog grooming will catch these issues as soon as they start.
Small dogs are not little big dogs. A 10lb Yorkie’s skin is thinner. Their joints are much smaller. Their entire grooming session has to be tailored around them. All I groom are dogs that weigh under 25 lbs. This is what we do, this is our business model. If you are out by Bridle Trails, then your pup might be picking up more stuff on their walk than your average dog. That just reinforces the fact that it will be important to groom and brush between appointments. Every customer I’ve got leaves with instructions on how to keep their dog groomed at home so that I’m able to keep up with it once they make the appointment. But that professional groom on schedule? That’s the only way we can all keep things manageable. We just have to make sure everything keeps running smoothly, and we keep small issues from becoming big problems.
