Small dog grooming in Kirkland is its own world, and after 16 years of working exclusively with dogs under 25 lbs, I can tell you that no two small breeds are alike. Their coats are different, their temperaments are different, and the way they handle a grooming table is different. A Yorkie is not a Shih Tzu. A Cavapoo is not a Poodle. What works beautifully for one can be completely wrong for another, and that's exactly why I don't treat small dog grooming as a single service with a single approach. I treat it as what it actually is — a craft that requires knowing the breed in front of you.

The doodle breeds are some of the most common small dogs I see here in Kirkland, and they come with some of the most misunderstood coats. Maltipoo grooming is a big part of what I do, and it starts with understanding that no two Maltipoos have exactly the same coat. Some lean more Maltese, some lean more Poodle, and that changes everything about how the coat behaves, how quickly it mats, and what kind of cut will actually hold up between appointments. Cavapoo grooming brings its own set of considerations — Cavapoos tend to have softer, wavier coats that can look deceivingly easy to manage until they're not, and the area around their ears and under their legs is where I see the most matting develop quietly between sessions.

For the Poodle side of the family, toy and miniature poodle grooming is one of my favorites to do well. Poodles have a reputation for being high-maintenance, and honestly, that reputation is earned — but when they're on a consistent schedule with someone who knows their coat, they're also one of the most rewarding breeds to groom. The curl pattern, the density, the way a good finish looks on a Poodle — there's nothing quite like it.

The small terrier and toy breeds are a different story entirely. Yorkie grooming requires a steady hand and a real understanding of how that silky coat moves and grows. Yorkies kept in a longer style need to come in more frequently than most owners expect — usually every 3 to 4 weeks — because that fine hair tangles faster than it looks like it should. Shih Tzu grooming has its own rhythm too. That flat face and the way their coat grows in multiple directions means I'm constantly thinking about how the finished cut is going to lay and how long it will stay looking intentional before it starts to grow out awkwardly. Both of these breeds reward a groomer who pays attention to the details, and I've been paying attention to them for a long time.

Some of the most beautiful coats I work with belong to Havanese, and some of the most matted ones do too. Havanese grooming is something I feel strongly about doing right. Their signature silky coat is stunning when it's healthy and maintained, but it's also one of the fastest to develop mats near the skin where you can't always see them. Kirkland's damp weather doesn't help — a Havanese that goes for a walk near the water in Moss Bay and doesn't get brushed out properly afterward is already working against itself.

Beyond the specific breeds I see most often, I also work with the full range of small breed dog grooming — Bichons, Pomeranians, Papillons, mixed breeds, and everything in between. If your dog is under 25 lbs and needs a groomer who actually specializes in small dogs rather than just tolerating them, this is the right place. Small dogs aren't scaled-down versions of big dogs. Their skin is more delicate, their joints are smaller, and their entire grooming experience needs to be built around that from start to finish. That's not a selling point for me — it's just the way I've always worked.

Why Small Dog Grooming Needs a Different Approach

Small dogs aren't just little big dogs. And their grooming shouldn't be either.

I mention this to pretty much every new client in Kirkland. A Maltipoo that weighs 7 pounds has thinner skin than a Lab. Joints are smaller. Anxiety levels are higher. A standard grooming table designed for a 60-pound dog feels like a parking lot to a Yorkie. A dryer that's totally fine for a Golden Retriever can scare the daylights out of a Shih Tzu in seconds. Standard salon setups work against your small dog.

Here is what makes small breed grooming so unique:

  • Skin is more sensitive to brush pressure, water temperature, and clipper heat
  • Bones and joints are fragile, care when handling or placing a dog is critical
  • Stress in dogs under 25 lbs is more intense
  • Coats vary a lot between breeds like Havanese, Cavapoos, and Toy Poodles
  • Small mouths and tight facial folds require very careful, slow detail work

According to the American Kennel Club, smaller dogs suffer from skin conditions and dental crowding. It is not trivia; it affects how I handle every appointment.

Families living near the Bridle Trails or the Bridle Trails State Park often have had prior bad experiences at salons. In every case, the story goes the same. Their pup went somewhere that handles every size, was rushed, and came home shaking. Shaking not from wetness, but from stress. Too much noise, too many dogs, and not enough attention.

I groom exclusively small breed dogs under 25 pounds. My tools in my mobile grooming van are selected for small dogs. The table is lowered, the pressure on the hoses are dialed back, the blade guards are sized for them. In Moss Bay near the waterfront, I work with a nervous little Cavapoo who can now fall asleep during the bath. Things are done right here. I have designed the environment to accommodate your small dog.

Twenty plus years of grooming experience without shortcuts. It is not difficult to differentiate the way a 4-pound Yorkie needs to be groomed compared to a 20-pound Cockapoo. Both are considered small, and each breed requires a completely different grooming approach.

Kirkland's Wet Climate Makes Grooming Frequency a Welfare Issue

As Kirkland residents you know we are quite damp most of the year, but do you know what Kirkland damp weather does to your small dogs coat and skin between your regular grooming sessions?

Small breeds under 25lbs have a fine dense coat that can trap moisture up close to their body. A Maltipoo walking in the wet grass near Juanita Beach Park in South Juanita, can go home and have damp fur that can take hours to completely dry. That wet hair can create the perfect environment for hotspots, yeast build up and matting that gets pulled tight to their skin. This is a case I see every week, a dog comes to me two days after the last grooming session, I look at the dog's ears and find mats so tight they're actually pulling skin back.

Here is a few specific things Kirkland's weather does to small breed coats:

  • Under a Shih Tzus's double coat, moisture breeds bacteria causing the sour smell owners try to wash out but can't.
  • Yorkies get damp on their paw pads from sidewalks picking up grit in cracks causing cracked skin between the toes
  • Fine Havanese fur soaks up the rain like a sponge and matts much more fast than most owners expect.
  • The ears of these dogs are kept warm and moist, and so these infections become recurring and the vet tells the owners that it can't be done without better grooming

This isn't just for aesthetic reasons. It's about welfare. "Regular grooming prevents a number of skin problems that may result in pain or discomfort in dogs," the American Kennel Club tells us. But in our climate, "regular" grooming is more frequent than it might be elsewhere. Moss Bay, which is located on the waterfront in Kirkland, experiences a particularly high humidity, and that humidity lasts late into spring. And the dogs that live in Moss Bay experience high humidity for up to nine months of the year. This is why a four to six week grooming interval for these dogs that would work for a climate that experiences less humidity is not sufficient for this climate. Their coats are not going to handle the rain like a coat in a less humid climate will. They will have the tendency to mat more, to develop skin problems quicker, and they need a groomer to adjust their grooming schedule to that. I only groom small dogs less than 25 pounds, so often recommend your 15 lb. Cavapoo should be in every three to four weeks in the fall and winter months, it is not just sales, it is based on over twenty-two years in this exact environment.

What's included in a small breed grooming?

Your pet and I will be the only dogs involved in a private appointment. I come to you in my custom converted Mercedes Sprinter van to the parking space right out front of your house, and your dog and I are alone. In my Urban Doggie 15-step signature SPA you're not waiting to get your appointment, and I don't rush your dog through any step, and there are no other dogs involved. Each step takes place one on one, with your dog free from a cage for the entire visit, like this:

  1. A soft welcome and a brief body check to note any skin problems, lumps, or areas of pain, before the bath
  2. The removal of mats and loose hair
  3. A warm bath, with shampoos and conditioners customized for your dog's coat type and skin needs
  4. A gentle face cleaning, mindful of small eyes and muzzles
  5. The cleaning of your dog's ears, along with an ear check-up
  6. A quick blow dry in a climate controlled low-speed dryer with quiet air, to a relaxed dog is maintained
  7. The hair cut and styling, as customized to your desired look, or to the breed standard
  8. Nail trimming and filed smooth so they do not scratch your furniture
  9. A sanitary trim, a trimming of the paw pads and a final checkup and touch-ups

Many dogs who have experienced anxiety at a salon will relax during their visit with me within a minute or two, without the use of a cage and crate. No cage at all, this is what The Urban Doggie does! There is no waiting in a kennel before the appointment begins, and your dog is taken straight back to you when the appointment is complete! The Urban Doggie sees many Maltipoos and Shih Tzus in Moss Bay and in the downtown Kirkland Waterfront area, Yorkies in the Norkirk area around Norkirk Park, and any dog in need of grooming will be sure to have me for their appointment. There is no other groomer working in the salon, and when you book your appointment, you're booking me.

A 7-pound Havanese will require a different blade pressure on the clippers, different water temperature, and different care of their delicate legs compared to a 20-pound dog. My 22 years of dedicated small breed experience (specifically working with small dogs under 25 lbs) in Kirkland means I know exactly how to read my small dogs to see how they respond and adjust the process in the moment. Everything your dog needs. One appointment. One price. It's all I offer, and all I need to offer.

How to prepare your small dog for a grooming visit

You don't have to do very much. I mean that. But I have a few things that I ask that can make the entire grooming experience smoother for your dog. First, here are things that truly help:

  1. Take your dog for a short walk or bathroom break. Just a five minute walk in your Norkirk neighborhood or a quick bathroom and sniff around at the Kirkland Library. A dog that has been able to move, sniff around, and empty their bowels and bladder will be a calmer, more focused dog when I arrive.
  2. Don't feed your dog a large meal before I arrive. A small breakfast is fine, but a full meal thirty minutes before I arrive, not so much. I understand that many of our smaller breeds are upset if their stomach is completely full during a bath time. If you're feeding your small dog breakfast in the AM, I suggest doing it at least an hour before I come.
  3. Don't worry about bathing your dog prior to the grooming session. I totally get the temptation. But I've seen too many Maltese, Shih Tzus, Maltipoos, etc., that look fine in the morning only for their home baths to create new mats that weren't there. I need to do my own bath and blow dry so your dog's haircut comes out the way I expect.
  4. If you feel like your dog has some smaller mats behind the ears or under the legs. Please just leave it. I offer a small dog's grooming with a de-matting treatment and will safely remove the matting.
  5. Have your dog's harness and leash ready. This may seem obvious, but please, don't try to chase your dog around your living room when we are trying to do the handoff.

One more thing that's helpful. Try to have a calm, relaxed energy. Small dogs pick up on our emotions like a lightning rod picks up a bolt from a lightning storm. Our clients, with dogs under 25 lbs, especially seem to sense our energy and adjust their behavior in response to us. It seems very small, but I have found that if you're nervous, your dog is nervous. So please just don't be nervous when I arrive! Don't hover, just keep your voice normal. For people in the Bridle Trails area near Bridle Trails State Park, I can park right next to the house and they take 10 steps from your door into my van and we are off. There's nothing about small dogs that benefits more from the at home service than small dogs. You are not going on a 10 minute drive to the salon, waiting in the small dog area at the salon for an hour, and driving back home to wait for your dog to settle down. And yes, this is how your puppy's first groom is too. It's the same gentle approach and kindness that applies to every groom. I handle Puppy's First Groom appointments with patience. The first groom is always gentler and slower and creates positive associations to grooming with every single one that I do in my career because kindness is not a feature. It's standard at this company start to finish.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I get my small dog groomed in Kirkland's wet climate?

Every four to six weeks is what I recommend for most small breeds in Kirkland. Our damp climate is hard on fine, dense coats. Moisture gets trapped close to the skin and causes matting, hot spots, and yeast buildup fast. A Maltipoo walking near Juanita Beach Park can come home with damp fur that takes hours to dry. Waiting too long between grooms turns a maintenance visit into a rescue mission. Kirkland's Most Trusted Mobile Groomer — Since 2010, I've seen what skipping grooms does to small coats here.

What makes small dog grooming different from grooming larger dogs?

Small dogs have thinner skin, fragile joints, and faster stress responses than larger breeds. A dryer that's fine for a Golden Retriever can terrify a Shih Tzu in seconds. Small mouths, tight facial folds, and coats that vary wildly between breeds like Havanese and Toy Poodles all need a slower, more careful approach. Small breeds aren't just little big dogs — and their grooming shouldn't be either. My entire business is built around small breed dogs under 25 pounds — nothing else. That focus changes everything about how I handle your pup.

Do you groom all dog breeds, or only certain small breeds?

I work exclusively with small breed dogs under 25 lbs. — that's it. Yorkies, Maltipoos, Shih Tzus, Cavapoos, Toy Poodles, Havanese and so many more. If your dog is a small breed under 25 pounds and you're in Kirkland 98033, you found the right groomer. Small-breed grooming done by someone who's spent 22 years mastering it is a completely different experience. I know where each breed mats first, which skin is sensitive, and exactly how to handle your specific dog's coat type.

Why is mobile grooming better for my small dog than taking them to a salon?

Mobile grooming isn't a perk. For small breeds, it's the smarter choice. No car ride to a noisy building. No waiting in a crate around strange dogs. No stress before the groom even starts. Your dog gets everything a salon offers and none of what stresses small breeds out. My van was built for small dogs — purpose-designed, not repurposed. Every detail was chosen with your dog's comfort in mind. 22 years later, this is still the best part of my day — watching a nervous little dog leave calm, clean, and happy.
